    DAVE CHAPPELLE PRINT

I was honored to be asked to do the illustration for Dave Chappelle’s return to New York City, which was used on the t-shirts that he gave his fans at Radio City Music Hall. Dave Chappelle is one of comedy's greats and I've always thought that he is hilarious, but also fiercely intelligent in his subversive critique of social and political structures. Chappelle plays by his own rules and I respect that. If you're like me and weren't one of the lucky ones that got to see him perform at Radio City Music Hall this past week, pick up the print that I'm releasing on Wednesday. Hopefully I'll get to see Chappelle perform live one of these days.

    PAINT IT BLACK – HAND

When I was working on the Paint it Black poster concept I tried several approaches, as I do with every poster, but instead of only one successful direction, I felt I found two solutions for Paint it Black. Both versions are inspired by the Rolling Stones song, but the first version was fashioned more after a vintage newspaper ad, while the Paint it Black Hand has a bit more of a propaganda feel. Regardless, they are both about oil dictating too much of our energy POLICY and our foreign policy. Imagine if all the money spent on wars and strategic interests in the Middle East had been spent on developing green energy alternatives. Instead, our government subsidizes the highly profitable oil and gas industries for $40 billion a year because no politician wants a rise in the price of gas to be blamed on them. Newsflash: we are still paying more for gas whether it's at the pump or through our taxes. The need for gas will remain, but we need to invest in sustainable energy alternatives as we transition off of the finite supply of fossil fuels that are also terrible for CO2 emissions. Proceeds from this print will go to the NRDC to support their efforts to shape responsible environmental policy. Thanks for caring.

    STRUMMERVILLE

The Clash are my all-time favorite band and their frontman, Joe Strummer, is a hero of mine for his music, lyrics, wit, compassion for the underdog, and stance against injustice. Joe's widow Lucinda approached me about creating an image of Joe to help raise funds for Strummerville, the charity set up to honor and fulfill Joe's belief that music can inspire and empower. Strummerville provides opportunities for musicians around the globe. I was incredibly honored that Lucinda asked me to be involved, and I was moved when she shared her opinion that Joe and I have similar philosophies. The print is a collaboration with photographer Kate Simon, who shot the first Clash cover. Please check out what Strummerville is about and show your support! Thanks for caring.

    BOB MARLEY

"I bought Bob Marley's Rastaman Vibrations shortly after I started skateboarding in 1984, purely because the only good skateboard ramp where I lived was called "The Rasta Ramp." I had mostly been listening to punk rock, but I was excited to discover reggae, which even more boldly embodied many of the same elements of social protest as punk but in a way that was much more palatable to my parents. I think my parents bought me Bob Marley and the Wailers records for every Christmas or birthday until I had accumulated their entire catalog; my very conservative grandmother even bought me a Bob Marley shirt from Jamaica. I leaned more towards punk, but some punk bands, most notably Bad Brains, embraced both punk and reggae. Bob Marley's music always cheered me up during my high-school years of personal struggle. I'm always inspired by how steadfast and positive Bob was."

    JELLO BIAFRA

The Dead Kennedys album "Plastic Surgery Disasters" was one of the first punk albums I bought back in 1984. I loved the music and lyrics from the album, especially the song "Bleed For Me" which skewered Ronnie Reagan's foreign policy and human RIGHTS record.I bought all of the Dead Kennedys albums that were out up to that point and they were a big part of my evolution toward questioning authority and corporate greed. "Fresh Fruit For Rotting Vegetables" is a classic. I have been able to work with Jello Biafra, the singer and brilliant lyricist of The Dead Kennedys, on a few projects over the years, and when he asked me to design a portrait skateboard of him for Powell-Peralta I knew I'd ask Glen E Friedman if I could work from one of his photos. Glen liked the way the skateboard turned out enough to suggest we do a screen print. Jello agreed and all three of us signed it. I think this is a pretty special collaboration considering how influential Jello and Glen have been in my life. Oh, Winston Smith deserves a shout out, because he created the Dead Kennedys logo and the Alternative Tentacles logo which are included in the collage.

    KEITH MORRIS

I was approached by Glen E. Friedman asking if I'd be interested in collaborating with him and his friend Shepard Fairey on a poster using a photo he had taken a coupla' dozen yrs. ago. I was familiar with Shepard and his work as we'd hung out at 2 or 3 art exhibits, seen various pieces of his including giant images of Henry Rollins, Ian McKaye, Glen Danzig and others at the KROQ punk gig out in San Bernardino and had been to his art space when he threw a flyer/poster/punk rock art shindig. Shepard and I talked about color schemes and seeing as I'm a fan of Rick Griffin who started off drawing comics for Surfer Magazine, posters for the Fillmore West and John Van Hamersveld who was responsible for the Beatles "Magical Mystery Tour" album cover and some of my favorite handbills for early gigs at the Shrine Auditorium in the late 60's I wanted to use some of their color examples....4 days later we were going to print.

    -Keith Morris

I"m a big fan of all of the bands Keith Morris has fronted… Black Flag, The Circle Jerks, and OFF!. My first punk SHOW was the Circle Jerks in 1986 in Summerville, South Carolina. I illustrated this image from one of Glen E. Friedman's photos of Keith around 1981 0r 1982 playing with the Circle Jerks. Glen also shot the Circle Jerks' "Golden Shower of Hits" cover which is in the collage in the lower left. Keith was kind enough to write down all of his favorite song titles from all three bands to incorporate into the collage.
Further notes: Keith also mentioned his love of "Germs" blue, so I made a color variation inspired by that as well as the psychedelic vibe and my usual color palette.
